May 2010: The Mary Lincoln Room

A garden party was held to celebrate the unveiling of the "Mary Lincoln Room," a project completed with the generous support of the International Furnishings and Design Association. President Lincoln's Cottage developed this room as a focus on Mary Lincoln's life at the Cottage. The "Mary Lincoln Room" will be used for special programs and events and will not be part of regular Cottage tours.

October 2009: Spiritualism and Mary Lincoln's Seance at the Cottage

This program explored Civil War era spiritualism through the story of Mary Lincoln's private séance at the Cottage. Curator Erin Carlson Mast illuminated the roots and rise of the spiritualist movement in America and the development of Mary's involvement in the movement. Guests learned about the mediums who worked with Mary Lincoln and walked through the events of a seance Mary Lincoln held at the Cottage, as recounted by Noah Brooks.

June 2009: The Lincoln's Move to the Cottage

President Lincoln's Cottage Curator, Erin Carlson Mast, shared historic accounts of the Lincoln's move to the Soldiers' Home each summer and talked about the kinds of furnishings they brought with them. She also shared new research on paint finishes in the Cottage, details of our ongoing furnishings plan and our plans for the Mary Lincoln Room, and led the group into the attic and other spaces that are not part of the regular tour.
