The President Lincoln's Cottage Experience

Your Visit

Tour

Visit Abraham Lincoln’s country home and workplace where he spent one quarter of his presidency. President Lincoln used the Cottage as a quiet setting for important meetings, family relaxation, and solitary reflection as he pondered decisions of profound national importance.

Included with your ticket purchase:

  • The Signature Cottage Tour, an innovative small group tour in which a professional guide uses “historical voices” and images through multimedia technology to bring the stories of Abraham Lincoln and his family to life
  • Self-guided exploration of the galleries, interactive exhibits and Museum Store in the Robert H. Smith Visitor Education Center
  • Viewing the new life-sized sculpture of Lincoln and his horse
  • Use of the picnic facilities behind the Visitor Education Center
  • Free parking on site

Here's how two visitors felt about the experience, including the comparatively minimalist approach to furnishings:

"The decision to emphasize Lincoln's thoughts, ideas, and issues of the day instead of furnishings was inspired, and made the house so much more personable. Each visitor is able to picture the President as s/he wishes; I found the rooms crowded with meaning.
Thanks for a wonderful, relaxing experience!"
--G.Thomason, 2009

"I suspect that rooms of furniture distract visitors from the personage of interest....The absence of furniture denies the weight of office anywhere to hide.”
--J. Mathews, 2010
